Cottage on Collins
Rozelle NSW

The transformation of this cottage is defined by light, proportion, and a deliberate sense of calm. An extension and new first floor have been carefully composed to sit comfortably within the scale of the original home, creating a contemporary family residence that feels both grounded and uplifting. The design embraces softness and restraint, allowing form, material, and light to shape the experience of the space rather than relying on overt gestures.

A blue entry door offers a subtle moment of play, setting the tone for interiors that are light-filled and quietly expressive. Timber floorboards anchor the ground plane, while circular skylights draw daylight deep into the home, creating shifting moments of light throughout the day. Curved joinery edges soften transitions between spaces, reinforcing a sense of flow and continuity. At the heart of the home, the kitchen is conceived as a sculptural yet highly functional space — warm timber cabinetry and stone surfaces are balanced with refined detailing, forming a natural gathering point for both daily family life and larger occasions.

Designed to accommodate a young family and frequent visitors, the living and dining spaces prioritise generosity and connection. A contemporary, family-focused living provides comfort and ease, while a bold dining table introduces colour and energy, encouraging shared meals and moments of togetherness. These spaces extend effortlessly into one another, supporting a relaxed, adaptable way of living.

The primary suite on the first floor is conceived as a retreat from the activity below. Intentionally calm and serene — a place of quiet escape — defined by soft tones, considered joinery, and a gentle layering of materials. Throughout the bathrooms, tactile finishes and playful colour introduce moments of delight, adding character while maintaining a refined, cohesive aesthetic. Overall, this contemporary cottage is both joyful and composed — a home shaped by light, softened by detail, and designed to evolve with the family over time.
