The concept for this home centred on maximising the feeling of space through the use of light and volume. The original 1900’s worker’s cottage was enhanced with a contemporary, yet sympathetic extension to the rear without feeling like two different architectural styles. The extension also needed to counter the angles of the original cottage in order to rationalise the floorplan. These two structures needed to feel harmonious while also providing an obvious threshold between the two. This was achieved through architectural and interior details that connected the two spaces seamlessly. The use of curves in the wall, ceiling and kitchen island softens the transition while the stone step provides a literal threshold between the two.
