Due to the spatial layout and enclosed nature of the original kitchen, natural light was compromised, resulting in certain areas being underutilised. The original floor plan contributed to the space feeling fragmented, with neglected pockets that were ready for transformation. Recognising this opportunity, our aim was to open up the area, ensuring uninterrupted views and maximise functionality. At the heart of our vision was the creation of an island bench, serving as both a preparation area and a servery zone within the dining space. The added integration of adaptable seating arrangements via a built-in booth seat allowed for versatility, catering to casual coffee breaks, intimate gatherings, or providing a workspace for remote tasks.

The ceiling height, which was not particularly generous, exacerbated the issue of light deficiency in the space. To address this, our approach focused on creating openness and focal points to enhance the sense of space. We intentionally reduced the number of lights and services on the ceiling, opting instead for discreet feature lighting, integrated air conditioning and strategically positioned adjustable downlights over the island, enhancing both function and aesthetics. Moreover, our design ethos emphasised seamless integration, with appliances discreetly incorporated and storage solutions strategically placed throughout. From front-facing storage on the island to concealed pantry space behind pocket sliding doors, each element was meticulously considered to maximise storage while maintaining a cohesive design that seamlessly transitions from the living area to the kitchen to the booth seating in one continuous flow.
